While searching for accommodations near Sintra on Booking, we were astounded by Convento de São Saturnino. It’s idyllic and charming location truly amazed us. We quickly decided that this would be the perfect place to spend our Valentine’s Day.

A glimpse of history

Objects found around this area during the restoration, in 1998, indicate that this was a place to worship  São Saturnino. About 1h walk from this convent you can also find the Hermitage of São Saturnino, at the top of the Serra de Sintra, in an area known as Peninha.

After 3 years undergoing restoration, the Convento de São Saturnino finally opened as a hotel in 2005.

Location

Besides the proximity to Sintra, which was our main requirement, this accommodation enjoys a privileged position overlooking the Atlantic, situated in a green hidden valley, inside the natural reserve of the Serra de Sintra – Cascais.

Located in Azóia, just 39 km from Lisbon, 16 km from Sintra, 14 km from Cascais and about 4 km from Cabo da Roca – the most western point in Europe.

As we have already mentioned, the strategic location was what most captivated us. We wanted a place to stay that was near Sintra with WOW factor . Without a shadow of the doubt, this accommodation not only fulfilled all our requirements, but also exceeded them.

The Hotel

Since the moment we made the reservation, we were counting down the days till our arrival. Finally, this day arrived and we could barely contain the emotion on the way to get there.  When we´re near Lisbon we turned to our good and useful friend, Google Maps, who easily showed us the way.

The arrival was made by a dirt road with a sharp descent and some very pronounced curves. The electric gate opened with our arrival. We just had to park and go to the front desk. We were warmly greeted and directed to our room

This is the perfect environment to relax and disconnect from the outside world. Literally! As soon as we arrived we realised that our mobile phones connection stopped working. But who needs a connection to the outside in paradise?

Turning away from the outside world is definitely the motto that best fits this place. Televisions won´t be found around here as well. Books, though, you can find many. Several books about Sintra that give you the desire to stay here, indefinitely, so that you can read more and more about the history and enchanted places of Sintra. There are also books with suggestions of charming hotels, where the Convento de São Saturnino is always mentioned as the ultimate place for romantic getaways.

Throughout the hotel, you´ll  find several paintings and a decoration of refinement and elegance with a medieval touch that fits in perfect harmony with the surrounding environment.

A wide range of drinks is also at your disposal in the bar, which operates on a self-service basis. Meaning that you can consume whatever you want, you just have to write down on paper, and you´ll  pay when doing the check-out.

By now, you certainly already realised how exclusive is the location of this hotel, but let us mention it just one more time showing you this photo to illustrate why we got so dazzled with this place.

We´re not traditionally early birds, but with the excitement of being in a place like this, we woke up easily at 7 am to explore the outer space of the hotel.

Rooms

The hotel has 6 rooms and 3 suites. All rooms have their own unique features.

We stayed in Room 5 which left us mesmerised with the view we had from our balcony. After staying here and waking up to this view it will be difficult to find another accommodation that can beat this experience.

The room is heated by radiators, which allows the temperature to be constantly warm and pleasant.

Valentine’s Day is a double special date for us. It´s also on this day that we celebrate every year we spend together. We decided that to celebrate our 2 years anniversary properly, we would choose to book the Romantic Package. Which means that in addition to the exhilarating view we had on the balcony of our room, we also had a bottle of champagne and delicious Belgian chocolates, which we quickly devoured.

Breakfast

Breakfast is available between 9 am and 11 am and is super tasty. The croissants were fantastic, the scrambled eggs and the bacon were mouthwatering. There were also cereals, milk, apple and orange juice.

Although this wasn´t the most varied breakfasts we have ever had, it was incredibly delicious. The icing on the cake is the dining room where it is served, which teleports to a movie-worthy environment.

In the breakfast room, classical music was playing. However, the sound that marked our meal the most was the heavy rain that started shortly after we sat comfortably at the table.

Meal room

As bursting as it appeared, the rain also went away and a beautiful blue day appeared inviting us to take our coffee for a stroll to the outside of the dining room so we could enjoy it with an unparalleled view.

It´s Perfect For Animal Lovers

Throughout the property, you will find excessive cuteness in the form of animals. Animals like cats, dogs, ducks, goats and even a cute donkey.

In the living room and in the central area of the hotel you can count on the company of a black cat who loves being petted and who won´t dispense your lap for a nap. We loved having the company of this permanent and sociable fury host. This was the only guest we had the pleasure of meeting throughout our stay. We have not seen any human guests. We felt totally at home. During the evening, we even felt like a family with our pet cat enjoying the comfort of the fireplace and the books.

Swimming pool

The hotel has a swimming pool which offers fantastic views over the valley and the sea. However, during our stay, the pool was undergoing renovations. The pool is expected to be ready better than ever in April. The pool has cold water, so it usually opens in the months of June or July.

This hotel looks amazing. Love the whole look of it including the resident animals. The only thing missing from your review – unless I have missed it – is any mention about the hosts.
Will definitely pay a visit sometime in the near future.

It´s great to know that you enjoyed our review, Dianne. We absolutely loved staying at this hotel.
You are right, we didn´t say much about the hosts. Mainly because after doing the check-in we felt absolutely at home since we had the whole hotel to ourselves and we barely saw the hosts during our stay, which was great for a couple like us who enjoys privacy. But in case you need anything more from the hosts you have a list of numbers in the reception that you can call anytime 😉 From the few times we saw the staff they were very kind and helpful.
We truly hope our answer is useful to you. Let us know if you have any other doubts.

Lara, I stayed here in 2003, before some of the hotel was finished and was privileged to meet the original owners, an architect and an interior designer. Even before completion this place was amazing and I’m glad you and your partner enjoyed it as I hope many others do so in the future!

It must have been such a pleasure to meet the original owners, the architect and the interior designer. This hotel is one of our all time favourites in Portugal. We love its unique location and decor.
