Review: Fuerte de la Concepción

Once upon a time, Fuerte de la Concepción, was a military fort, built in the seventeenth century. Now, it´s a luxury hotel and a paradise for history lovers. Did you know that this is the only hotel in Europe located in a star-shaped fortress?

This hotel has 28 junior suites, 3 suites, and 4 double rooms.

The hotel is located near to Aldea del Obispo ( Salamanca province ), just 500 meters away from the border with Portugal.

It´s the perfect choice for those who want to explore the unique beauty of this region. As an example of this beauty, you have the waterfall of Pozo de Los Humos which is about 1h30-2h from the hotel. It´s also perfect for those who want to make a stop on the way to Salamanca . These were the two reasons that led us here.

Probably, if you are going on summer, going to the waterfall might not be the best idea, it´s very likely that it´s dry in this time of the year. We recommend you to keep the visit to the waterfall in the winter or spring ( we went in April) in order to enjoy the waterfall in its full splendour.

Once you are here, you can also take advantage of your location and visit the International Douro Nature Park  – we didn´t visit it yet, but we really want to.

Our experience

As usual, this was a last minute booking. We made the reservation late in the afternoon for that same night. Fortunately, the hotel has 24 hours check in. We reached the hotel around 3 am, we went to the reception and were greeted by a friendly receptionist who led us to our room. The hotel also has a parking lot at no extra cost.

We chose a junior suite and when we got there, we had this little gift welcoming us.

The junior suite is large. Besides the bed and bathroom, also has a sofa and a table.

You will see the fantastic photos of the places you can discover in this region in the book “Enjoy Castilla y Leon” and, then you will wish to stay here for a longer time and discover the charms of this region.

It´s included in the room rate and it was one of the best breakfasts we ever had.

It was a buffet and we had a lot to choose from. The orange juice was natural and delicious. I can´t remember of drinking so much orange juice early in the morning as in that day. It was also a paradise for sweet lovers, the donuts, and the chocolate croissants were fantastic. My favourite were the chocolate croissants. It also has fruit, cheese, bread and many other things.
